Public transport in Vienna becomes more expensive/ Lack of funds and high

A lack of public funds is forcing Vienna to raise the price of its annual public transport ticket for the first time in 13 years, removing the offer of unlimited travel on buses, trams and the metro for one euro per day.

Citizens of the Austrian capital will have to pay at least 461 euros for an annual ticket from January, a 26% increase from the current price of 365 euros, the public transport company announced.

The change, which still ranks Vienna as one of the most affordable European capitals for public transport, is a blow to key policies of the Social Democratic Party, which has led the city since 1945. In 2012, the capital lowered the price of the annual ticket from 449 to 365 euros, hoping to encourage further use of public transport.

Almost 1.3 million Viennese residents, making up about 65% of the city's population, owned an annual ticket last year, compared with about 768,000 in 2012. The city has announced austerity measures to curb a projected budget deficit of 3.8 billion euros this year.

Vienna lost its place as the world's most liveable city this year to Copenhagen, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. The factors that brought about the change in the ranking were growing security concerns after the discovery of several plots for terrorist attacks.
