Energy purchases from KESH/ Unfavorable hydro year, total bill reaches 159 million euros
The unfavorable water situation has forced the Albanian Power Corporation to develop several energy purchasing procedures in recent weeks, in order to meet consumer needs.
In the last 3 procedures, around 26 million euros have been spent, while the total bill for this year has reached around 159 million euros. In recent weeks, 2 procedures for the sale of energy have also been carried out, generating a limited value of around 730 thousand euros, as well as an optimization procedure, from which a modest value of around 17 thousand euros has been obtained.
This is not a good year from an energy point of view, due to high temperatures and a lack of rainfall, which would enable the production of electricity from the Drini Cascade hydroelectric power plants.
The price at which energy was procured during this year is estimated at around 123.6 euros/mWh, while the most expensive energy was purchased in January-February. This situation presents a strong contrast to last year, when by the end of the first 6 months no import procedure had been carried out, thanks to the supply from the Drini Cascade HPPs. For 2024, the total electricity import bill reached around 70 million euros.
Despite the growing numbers of solar energy, the Albanian electricity system remains dependent on weather conditions, which during periods of drought cost public finances millions of euros.
