Greeks, "overworked" - One in five people works over 47 hours a week

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) from the Labour Force Survey for the third quarter of the year show that working for more than one employer is almost impossible in practice. The main job covers the entire available time of Greek employees, despite the great public interest and recent legal debate on the “13-hour day” and parallel employment.

The publication of the new data comes several months after the implementation of a legal framework that theoretically allows working up to 13 hours a day in a company, as was the case for dual employment. Although the measure was promoted with the aim of increasing flexibility and income for employees, ELSTAT data shows that reality has exceeded any intention of lawmakers.

With 79.5% of employees stating that they work “normal hours” and nearly one in five saying they exceed 47 hours per week, it appears that the limit has been exceeded for a large portion of the workforce.

The low percentage of second jobs (1.4%) also supports the view that main working hours do not leave room for other work. According to ELSTAT, 5.8% of employees declare that they would like to work more hours.

The data also show a decrease in unemployment to 8.2% for the third quarter of this year, combined with an expansion in employment. However, the domestic market continues to be characterized by high intensification, the gradual reconstruction of professions with the predominance of the service sector, the contraction of the primary sector and large regional gaps.

The number of unemployed has also decreased by 8.2% on an annual basis and reached 393,162 people, with about 231,000 of them long-term unemployed (looking for work for a year or more).
