Trump threatens 200% tariff on French wines - After Macron is unwilling to join

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wines and champagne after French President Emmanuel Macron was reported to be unwilling to join the "Peace Board" in Gaza.

When a reporter in Miami asked him for an answer regarding Macron's stance, Trump dismissed the French leader's influence and said he would use trade sanctions as leverage.

"Well, nobody wants him because he's going to be out of office very soon. What I'm going to do is, if they feel hostile, I'm going to put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes and he'll join in. But he's not obligated to join in," Trump said.

Macron's five-year presidential term will end in May 2027 and under French law, he cannot run again for a third term.

The "Peace Board" is a global body approved by the United Nations Security Council in November last year, established to oversee the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

Trump also reiterated his plans to control Greenland, downplaying the possibility of resistance from Europe. “I don’t think they’ll object much,” he said.

Referring to Denmark's historic claims to Greenland, Trump said Danish leaders were "very good people" but argued that a centuries-old presence did not give them ownership.

Denmark has maintained a colony in Greenland since 1721, and the island became part of Denmark in 1953. In 2009, Denmark granted Greenland self-government, giving the territory control over all its affairs except foreign policy and defense.

Trump threatened on Friday to take control of Greenland "whether European lawmakers like it or not," claiming it was necessary for "world security."

On Saturday, he also warned that the US would impose tariffs of up to 25% on eight European countries, including the UK, until the US takes control of Greenland.

In response, European states are considering retaliatory tariffs and broader punitive economic countermeasures against the US.
