Albania increases purchases of live cattle from abroad/ July brings one of the highest historical receipts, over 3 thousand tons in one month

Live animal imports increased significantly in July, reaching near historic highs. In just one month, Albania imported around 3,055 tons of live animals, with a bill of 711.8 million lek, one of the highest monthly values recorded since 2005.
In the entire historical series, July 2026 results in the third month with the highest value of imports. Only April 2024, with around 743.6 million lek, and December 2025, with 717.1 million lek, are higher.
In terms of quantity, July also marks a very high level. With over 3,000 tons, it is the second month with the highest volume of imports in the series, after December 2025, when around 3,313 tons of live animals were imported.
Compared to July last year, the change is strong. In July 2025, about 2,281 tons were imported, while this year the quantity increased by about 34%. At the same time, the value of imports increased by 46.6%, from 485.5 million to 711.8 million lek.
The increase is also noticeable compared to the previous month. From around 2,463 tons in June, imports rose to 3,055 tons in July, or around 24% more, while the bill expanded by around 25.8%.
The trend is not limited to just one month. During the period January-July 2026, Albania imported around 17,970 tons of live animals, compared to around 15,099 tons in the same period last year. This represents an increase of around 19%.
In value, the seven-month bill reached about 4.18 billion lek, up from 3.55 billion lek a year earlier, or 17.9% more.
The increase in imports may also be related to the need to supplement domestic supply, at a time when Albanian livestock has lost livestock in several categories. Higher seasonal demand during the summer months may have further increased the need for supplies from abroad.
