The US will pay 725 million USD to the UN - The figure represents about 20% of the total debt of 4 billion USD

The administration of US President Donald Trump has informed Congress that it will pay about $725 million to the United Nations, a move that experts describe as a welcome step towards paying billions of dollars in obligations.
The US administration has criticized the global body for failing to fulfill its potential and has cut funding to many UN agencies. When asked about the planned payment, a US official said any payment would depend on the organization continuing to reform, adding that the United States has not transferred any funds so far.
The funding allocation, outlined in a State Department memo to Congress on August 4, comes ahead of President Donald Trump's address to the UN General Assembly in New York next month. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously said the organisation faces "imminent financial collapse" due to unpaid contributions from member states.
"Over the past six months, the United States has achieved historic reforms across the UN, reforms long considered impossible, including the first real budget cut in UN history, resulting in nearly a billion dollars," a State Department official said, responding to Reuters questions about the payment.
The $725 million figure represents less than 20% of the more than $4 billion the US owes the UN. However, Washington has said the total is much lower and that it has made some payments.
Under Article 19 of the UN Charter, a member state loses its right to vote in the General Assembly if its arrears exceed two years in annual assessments. The US is the largest contributor to the UN budget, but under the Trump administration it has refused to make mandatory payments to the regular and peacekeeping budgets and has cut funding to other UN agencies.
