What is happening to age in Albania? From children to 30-year-olds. Albania is

According to official data, the population of Albania on January 1, 2025 is 2.36 million inhabitants, a decrease of 1.2% compared to 2024. If we cross-reference the data with those of Eurostat, we see that Albania ranks among the countries in Europe that have recorded a population decline.

While the EU population on January 1, 2025 was estimated at 450.4 million inhabitants, with an increase of 0.2%, Italy, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Estonia, Hungary and Latvia were the countries that recorded a decline.

On the other hand, Liechtenstein, Malta, Ireland, Iceland and Luxembourg recorded the highest population growth, from 1.5% to 2.2%.

Data in Albania shows a general trend of population contraction in most young and middle-aged age groups. “Scan Intel” has analyzed the annual population change in the country, referring to INSTAT figures.

In younger age groups the change is mainly negative and in some cases quite significant. For example, the 25-29 age group marks a decrease of 5.3%, while the 5-9 and 15-19 age groups also have significant decreases of 4.0% and 3.9%. These data reflect a trend of decreasing fertility or long-distance migration of young people.

Even in the middle age group segment, most of the changes are negative but milder. Meanwhile, in the older age groups we see a significant increase in the population, especially in the age groups 75-79 and 85+ with an increase of 8.8% and 8.6% respectively. The age groups 65-69 and 70-74 also have positive growth of over 3%.

Albania's young population is shrinking while the elderly population is growing. This trend points to potential demographic challenges in the future, including an aging population and a shrinking young workforce.
