Solar energy leads Europe - Sets historic record for June, with over 22% of total
Solar power became the leading source of electricity in Europe in June for the first time in a full month, contributing 22.1% of total generation. The sector surpassed nuclear power plants (21.8%) and wind power (15.8%), British think tank Ember said.
Following these sources were natural gas (14.4%) and hydroelectric plants (12.8%), according to the report.
For at least 13 days, a record was broken in energy production from photovoltaic panels, due to continuous installations and thanks to sunny days on the continent.
Wind energy also recorded historic figures, contributing 15.8% of production in June and 16.6% in May, although the start of the year was difficult due to less favorable conditions and weaker winds.
Coal-fired power plants made up a dramatically reduced share of the European mix, at just 6.1%, according to Ember. The two countries that rely most on coal, Germany and Poland, also reduced production last month, to 12.4% and 42.9% respectively.
However, as overall energy demand increases, fossil fuels, especially coal and gas, are not going away. Thanks to their combustion, 23.6% of European electricity was produced in June, up from 22.9% in May 2024.
More gas was used in the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2024, mainly due to lower availability of hydroelectric facilities, Ember further explained.
