Greece lacks IT experts - Latest EU rankings for number of technology specialists
While digital transformation and investment have been in the spotlight in recent years, finding talent, especially in the information technology sector, has become a concern for many businesses. According to new data from Eurostat, Greece is suffering in this sector, as it still does not employ enough specialists in information and communication technology (ICT), even maintaining a negative lead compared to other EU members.
Eurostat data for 2024 show that 10 million ICT specialists were employed in the EU, a number corresponding to 5% of all employees. The trend at European level is increasing, with the data showing an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to the previous year and 1.6 percentage points since 2014.
While Greece employs half the workers compared to the European average, with the percentage of specialists in the sector at only 2.5% of the total. Research has shown that the Greek market will need 300,000 accredited specialists by 2030 to contribute to the country's digital transformation.
This specific performance ranks Greece last, behind Romania (2.8%), Italy (4%), Slovenia (4.3%) and Poland (4.5%). Sweden is in first position in the specific ranking, with 8.6% of total employees.
However, the low employment rates of IT specialists are a serious indicator of the backwardness of Greece’s production model and education system. Even now that technology and startups are booming, experts report that the country remains a small market with fewer job opportunities for many such professionals. Also, the continued inability to connect the education system with the labor market and the flight of highly qualified young people during the years of economic crisis are important factors.
Eurostat data further shows that only one in five ICT specialists is a woman. The proportion of women last year reached 19.5%, while that of men exceeded 80.5%. The highest rates of female employment in ICT are in Estonia (27.6%) and Romania (27.3%).
