Financing of the Durrës-Rrogozhina railway - Government approves in principle the loan agreement with the EBRD
The government has approved in principle the loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the financing of the first phase of the Durrës - Rrogozhina railway. The approval comes after the EBRD gave its approval a month ago. The loan has a value of 30 million euros and is an integral part of the financing package of 120.5 million euros. Meanwhile, the remaining 90 million euros will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank, the agreement of which was approved by the executive a week ago.
This project aims to rehabilitate and modernize the Durrës–Rrogozhinë railway line, a 34 km long segment, which will be electrified and upgraded in accordance with European Union standards. After the completion of this investment, trains will be able to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h. This railway axis is part of Corridor VIII, a strategic route connecting Italy with Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, serving as an important hub for the transport of passengers, goods and, potentially, for military mobility purposes.
In addition to the economic and strategic benefits, this project will have a significant positive impact on the environment. It will contribute to reducing road traffic and pollution, shifting more freight and passenger transport from roads to railways, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions.
With the approval of this agreement, Albania is continuing its efforts to modernize and improve its railway infrastructure, making it part of the European railway network, with potential benefits for the economy and the environment.
