Budget support for railways increases - Over 29 billion lek planned by 2028
The Albanian government has planned an increase in investments in the railway transport sector, according to the Medium-Term Budget Program 2026-2028. Over the four years including the current one, a total of around 29.6 billion lek is expected to be allocated for the development and modernization of the railway network in the country.
According to official data, in 2025 the projected fund for railway transport is 6.08 billion lek. Subsequently, for 2026 the fund reaches 5.68 billion lek, while it peaks in 2027 with 9.07 billion lek. For 2028, 8.78 billion lek are planned.
The "Rail Transport" program includes significant interventions in existing lines and the construction of new segments. Specifically, the priority projects are 3 railway lines.
One of them, which is in a more advanced stage, is the rehabilitation of the Durrës - Tirana Passenger Terminal railway line and the construction of the new Tirana - Rinas line, which aims to improve the capital's railway connection with the port and international airport. The other project is the rehabilitation of the Vorë - Hani i Hotit railway line, an important axis for the connection with Montenegro and further with the European railway network.
While the third project is the renovation of the Durrës - Rrogozhinë line, which remains an important hub for national and international freight transport, as part of the VIII railway Corridor.
One of the main objectives of this program is to increase the volume of export-import goods transport via railway. According to plans, by 2028 this volume is expected to reach 45% more than the level achieved in 2014, contributing to the reduction of logistics costs and the positive impact on the environment.
