Businesses are modernizing processes, not products/ Technology and communication drive innovation in Albania

Technology and communications companies remain the most active in innovation in Albania, leading by a wide margin over other sectors of the economy.
Data published by INSTAT show that 67.9% of enterprises in the information and communication sector reported innovative activities, the highest level among all economic activities. Compared to the previous survey, the sector has maintained a high pace of investment in technology, new processes and digital services.
Following the technology sector are financial and insurance activities, where 55.1% of companies were active in innovation. Meanwhile, the manufacturing industry recorded an innovation level of 43.3%, while the electricity, gas and air conditioning supply sector reached 45%.
Growth has also been observed in transportation and storage, as well as in professional, scientific and technical activities, which shows that businesses are increasingly oriented towards the modernization of work processes and the automation of services.
The report highlights that Albanian enterprises are investing more in improving business processes than in creating new products. In total, 37.3% of companies declared innovation in business processes, while 28.4% reported product innovation.
In the services sector, process innovation reached 40.1%, the highest level among economic sectors, reflecting the expansion of digitalization, the use of new technologies, and the transformation of the way services are provided.
In the middle of the observed period 2022-2024, INSTAT estimates that innovative activity in the economy has continued to expand, driven mainly by large companies and sectors with higher technological intensity.
