More vacations and fewer business visits/ How is Albanians' behavior towards travel changing?
In recent years, it has been noticed in Albania that tourism has increased significantly, making the country increasingly popular. But, on the other hand, what often stands out according to statistics on the movement of citizens is that Albanians have also started to travel more and more, both within and outside the territory of Albania. Tourism and vacations have become the main priority of Albanians, especially within the country, according to INSTAT.
The number of Albanians traveling for vacation has increased significantly since 2019, both domestically and internationally. The largest increase was observed in 2020 and 2021, perhaps as a result of the realignment of priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2023 to 2024, vacations within the country reached their highest level (54.1%), reflecting an increased orientation towards domestic tourism.
Business travel has been generally low and volatile throughout the period 2019–2024. 2021 is an exception, when business travel abroad peaked at 10.5%. However, the trend has been downward since then. This can be explained by the shift to virtual meetings, which are increasingly taking precedence.
The category of trips to visit relatives and friends experienced a significant decline in 2020 (especially for trips abroad), which is directly related to the pandemic restrictions. However, from 2021 onwards, this category has gradually recovered and in 2024 it has marked a significant increase in trips outside Albania (46.1%).
The “Other” category has fluctuated slightly, but is generally declining. There was an increase in 2020 and 2021, which is probably related to unusual travel reasons during the pandemic. Since 2022, this category has followed a downward trend, returning to pre-crisis levels.
