Foreign dairy is flooding the market/ From milk to eggs, the bill that Albania

From milk to cheese, eggs and honey, Albania's bill for imported products is at historically high levels. In July 2026 alone, imports in this category reached around 784 million lekë, marking the second highest monthly value recorded in more than two decades and confirming the growing dependence of the domestic market on foreign supplies.

The historical record remains July 2025, when imports reached about 815 million lek. Thus, despite the fact that this July's bill resulted about 3.8% lower than a year ago, it remains very close to the record level. Compared to June 2026, imports increased by about 13%, from 694 million to 784 million lek.

The increase becomes even more noticeable when looking at the entire first half of the year. During the period January-July 2026, Albania imported about 4.42 billion lek of dairy products, eggs and honey, approximately 5% more than in the same period of 2025.

Historical data shows that the import bill has changed significantly. In July 2005, Albania imported around 95 million lek of products in this category; in July this year the value was over eight times higher.

Meanwhile, domestic production data shows a reverse trend for most livestock products. Total milk production fell from about 1.11 million in 2019 to 868 thousand in 2025, a contraction of about 22%, with declines in both cow's milk and sheep and goat's milk. Egg production also fell to about 837 thousand in 2025, from 888 thousand a year earlier.
