Growing loneliness and limited capacities for the elderly - Kuka: Demand for

Population aging, emigration, and changing family structures are pushing the social system towards continuous challenges.

In Albania, there are only 6 state-run residential centers, despite the fact that thousands of elderly people live alone. Even in Tirana, with its nearly 1 million inhabitants, there is only one state center and the rest are private, from foundations, religious associations, etc.

Hysni Kuka, director of a residential center in the capital, says that the needs for care are great and are mainly citizens who have significant health and family problems and are without income.

But even the elderly, who have family members in emigration, choose asylums as a safer alternative, where they can have continuous care.

It seems that changing demographics have also broken a major taboo in society, as the inability to be physically close to the elderly is increasingly pushing family members to find residential centers as a solution for the elderly.
