Long-term solution for modern waste management - Bajkaj Landfill will cover

The Bajkaj landfill in Delvinë is one of the most important investments for integrated waste management in the south of the country. The project will provide a long-term solution for waste treatment for 12 municipalities in the Gjirokastër district and the Vlora-South area, guaranteeing coping capacities until 2040.

The investment, carried out by the Ministry of Environment with the support of the European Union within the framework of the project "EU for the Circular Economy - Regional Waste Management Program", has a total value of around 4.43 million euros and aims to fully modernize the existing system through the construction of new infrastructure, the improvement of landfill cells, the rehabilitation of leachate and biogas systems, as well as the gradual integration of circular economy elements, including recycling and composting.

The Minister of Environment, Sofjan Jaupaj, stressed that this is a strategic investment for southern Albania. According to him, in addition to increasing waste treatment capacity, it guarantees European standards, reduced environmental risk, and a sustainable response to the seasonal increase in waste, especially from tourist flows.

The Gjirokastër-Vlora-South area includes around 160,000 inhabitants, while during the summer season waste production increases significantly due to the intensity of tourism in municipalities such as Saranda and Himara. The project foresees the expansion and isolation of the second landfill cell, the improvement of the wastewater treatment system, landfill gas management, as well as new modern operational equipment.

According to the projected schedule, the preliminary design phase has been completed in February 2026, while the detailed design is expected to be finalized in April 2026. The tendering and contracting process is expected to last about 3 months, while the implementation of the works will begin after contracting and will last 18–24 months, guaranteeing the completion of the interventions within the planned deadlines.

The intervention also includes the construction of three transfer stations in Përmet–Këlcyrë, Tepelenë–Memaliaj and Gjirokastër–Libohovë–Dropull, as well as the rehabilitation of 12 informal landfills throughout the area, significantly improving environmental standards and service to citizens.
