Albania towards a digital economy - BoA: Debits account for the majority of electronic transactions of businesses and individuals

During 2025, more and more payments were made through electronic banking channels.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, businesses have carried out over 16.7 million electronic transactions, with a total value of around 953 billion lek. The vast majority are debit payments, i.e. money that comes out of the business account to settle invoices, rent, payments to suppliers and daily obligations. These debits constitute over 16.6 million transactions, but with small values for each action.
In contrast, transfers where businesses receive money into their accounts are much fewer in number, but much larger in value. Around 147 thousand credit transfers have circulated over 813 billion lekë, including salary payments, loan disbursements and funds transfers between companies.
The same orientation towards electronic payments is also being observed among individuals. During 2025, citizens carried out around 15.9 million periodic transactions, with a total value of 342 billion lek. Over 12.8 million of them are debits, related to loan installments, card payments, as well as payments for basic services, such as energy, water or internet.
Transfers where individuals receive money into their accounts, such as salaries, interest on deposits or loans, are around 3 million transactions, with a value of over 227 billion lek.
The third quarter of the year marks the highest volume of these electronic payments, both for businesses and individuals, reflecting the seasonal increase in economic activity during the summer.
In practice, this data shows that citizens and businesses are increasingly using banks' digital channels for everyday payments, increasing the formalization of the economy and reducing dependence on transactions outside the banking system.
