Vineyard areas for wine are determined - Draft law/ Strengthening indigenous

The viticulture and wine sector represents one of the branches with high development potential of Albanian agriculture. The centuries-old tradition of grape cultivation in Albania, accompanied by a high diversity of autochthonous varieties, creates a strong basis for the production of quality and competitive wines in national and international markets.

The lack of a clear zoning and classification system of territories according to climatic and pedological characteristics has so far been an obstacle to fully exploiting the potential that the country offers.

For this reason, the Ministry of Agriculture has submitted for public consultation the draft law on "Determination of wine grape production areas", which proposes wine grape production areas, based on the best available scientific and socio-economic knowledge, provided by the responsible national institutions.

Referring to the relationship, the definition of homogeneous areas for vineyard cultivation represents a crucial step for the positioning of Albanian wines in the EU market and the global market, linking the rich traditional heritage with modern technology and international standards.

The objectives expected to be achieved are the official classification of wine grape production areas; Creation of a scientific basis for zoning; Creation of homogeneous areas suitable for the cultivation of autochthonous varieties such as: Kallmet, Sheshi i Zi, Sheshi i Bardhë, Vlosh, Serina and Debina.

The Albanian wine production sector is integrated into common EU practices for wine and grapes; It enables the protection of indigenous varieties through certification and their inclusion in quality schemes; It provides a scientific basis for guiding investments and new plantings, maximizing yield and quality.

This process is considered necessary for the inclusion of Albanian wines in the European Union quality scheme (Protected Geographical Indications-PGI, Protected Designations of Origin-PDO, traditional terms, etc.) which today dominate the European wine market.

A study has currently been conducted, according to which most of the lowland and hilly areas of Albania (with altitudes <600 m) are optimal for the cultivation of wine grape varieties, and also the coastal areas and gentle hills of Central and Southern Albania exhibit very suitable conditions for early and medium-ripening cultivars. Slopes between 5-15% are found to be ideal for high quality wine grapes.
