Electrification of the Tirana-Durres railway, part of the EU's 171 million euro package for the Western Balkans

The European Union has announced a new financial support package worth 171 million euros for the Western Balkan countries, focused on developing infrastructure and strengthening the private sector.
According to the European Commission, the funds will be provided to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia, with the aim of increasing regional cooperation and accelerating the European integration process.
European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has stressed that investments in the region are essential for bringing the Western Balkan countries closer to the European Union. She stated that these projects aim to create concrete opportunities for citizens, covering areas from infrastructure to business development.
Of the total amount, 91.8 million euros are for infrastructure projects, including the implementation of high-speed internet and the electrification of the Durrës-Tirana railway in Albania, the improvement of the power transmission system in North Macedonia, the reconstruction and energy modernization of schools in North Macedonia and Montenegro, as well as water supply projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The rest of the package, worth 76.3 million euros, will go to support the private sector, with programs for small and medium-sized enterprises and strengthening public-private partnerships in the region.
Also, around 3 million euros have been allocated for technical assistance in Albania and Bosnia to promote investments in energy, water, innovation and scientific research.
The European Commission has announced that the projects will be implemented in cooperation with local partners and international financial institutions.
Kosovo and Serbia are not included in this financial package.
