What are the costs of recycling to the European market? - Baltëza: Waste separation at source is a problem, the law has existed since 1995

The recycling sector in Albania remains one of the sectors that faces difficulties in meeting EU standards. In an interview with Scan TV, one of the experienced operators in the field of recycling, Bardhyl Baltëza, stated that the main problem remains the way waste is managed at source.
Bardhyl Baltëza- Recycler:
"The first in Albania has a big problem. It is not the recycling industry that needs to be repaired. Urban waste is not separated by type. Although the law has been in place since '95, that waste must be separated, but here it is missing. And it makes quality more difficult. This is the main problem in Albania that municipalities, local governments must separate urban waste at source."
Meanwhile, another obstacle that makes Albanian operators less competitive in the international market is the high cost of recycling.
"There is only one main problem here, we have exported to Italy, Greece, Kosovo, the Balkans, 5 years ago we also exported cardboard to America. The problem is one, the recycling costs in Albania are very high compared to the recycling costs of the European community. In general, the European community, as a heating fuel, works either with natural gas or natural gas LPG. There is a very big difference here, if natural gas or LPG in the European community costs 400 euros, we pay 800."
According to him, Albanian recycling plants can meet EU standards, but one of the problems is their digitalization.
