“35% renewable energy in transport” - The highest target in the region, Energy Community: Policies needed

Albania has set the most ambitious target among the 9 Energy Community countries for the use of renewable sources in transport. By 2030, the country aims for 35% of the energy used in this sector to come from renewable sources, the highest level among Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine.
However, achieving this objective requires a significant acceleration of measures, according to a recent report by the Energy Community, which analyses the planning and implementation of measures foreseen in the field of energy and climate. The report highlights that, while the development of renewable sources in electricity production is advancing, there has been almost no progress in the transport sector, so a stronger policy focus is required in this direction.
In the case of Albania, the National Energy and Climate Plan foresees the orientation of policies towards the electrification of transport, the development of charging infrastructure and the support of electric vehicles.
The challenge becomes even more important in the long term. According to the report, final energy consumption is projected to increase after 2030 in most Energy Community countries, with industry and transport as the main drivers of this growth.
Meanwhile, Albania is starting from a relatively favorable position in the use of renewable sources as a whole. The national objective is for them to cover 54.4% of gross final energy consumption by 2030, above the 52% obligation set for the country.
