Tariffs "punish" German exports - Shipments to the US shrank to the

German exports to the United States have fallen for the fifth straight month, reaching their lowest level in almost four years, data showed on Monday, highlighting the growing impact of US tariffs on transatlantic trade.

Although the US remains the main destination for German exports, shipments to this country decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous month in August, reaching 10.9 billion euros.

On an annual basis, exports to the US fell by 20%, reflecting the long-term tension caused by tariff policies. On the other hand, German imports from the US increased in August, with shipments increasing by 3.4% compared to the previous month, to 8 billion euros.

The European Union reached an agreement with the Trump administration in August, imposing a unified 15% tariff on most European exports to the US.

The agreement covers key sectors such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and wood. Several categories of European goods have preferential benefits under this agreement, including aircraft and their parts, generic drugs and chemical ingredients.

According to the European Commission, goods and services worth over 4.2 billion euros cross the Atlantic every day, with an annual trade value of 1.6 trillion euros.

Beyond transatlantic relations, Germany's trade balance improved in August, despite subdued export activity.

Total exports reached 129.7 billion euros, shrinking by 0.5% from July. While imports stood at 112.5 billion euros, with a monthly decline of 1.3%, but an annual expansion of 3.5%.

As a result, the trade surplus increased to 17.17 billion euros in August 2025 and marked the second consecutive monthly increase.
