Greece suspends asylum requests from Africa - Government aims to limit the entry of migrants into Greek territory
Greece will temporarily suspend asylum applications from migrants from North Africa. The measure aims to manage the influx of foreigners before they enter Greek territory.
Greece will temporarily suspend processing of applications for migrants coming from North Africa, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
The legislative measure, which will be presented to Parliament, will initially suspend applications for a period of three months. Mitsotakis described it as a "necessary and temporary response", based on the same legal framework used during the 2020 migration crisis at the Evros border with Turkey.
"Those who enter the country illegally will be arrested and detained," Mitsotakis said in his speech to lawmakers, adding that the current situation "requires extraordinary measures."
The government also plans to create a new closed reception facility on the southern island of Crete, to help manage the influx locally, with the possibility of creating a second center if necessary.
Talks are ongoing with both Libya's internationally recognized government and the rival administration in eastern Libya, Mitsotakis said. He added that Greece's armed forces are ready to cooperate with Libyan authorities to prevent the departure of migrant boats.
"In coordination with Libyan officials, we are prepared to stop these ships before they reach international waters and ensure their return to their point of origin," the Greek prime minister said.
