European Parliament adopts Resolution on Albania/Spiropali: Assessment of progress on the path towards the EU!
Following a debate held the day before and following the approval on June 4, 2025 by the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the European Parliament approved today, July 9, in a plenary session in Strasbourg, the report on Albania's progress for the years 2023 and 2024.
The Speaker of the Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, expressed in a reaction on social networks that this report constitutes an important political and institutional assessment of Albania's progress on the path towards membership in the European Union and confirms the broad support that the enlargement process enjoys in the European Parliament.
"We welcome the European Parliament's report, appreciate its constructive and supportive role, and thank the MEPs for closely following developments in Albania and the Balkan region," Spiropali stressed.
In particular, Spiropali reiterated his gratitude to the rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Scheider, "for his single-minded commitment, his objective and balanced approach to both the achievements and the challenges we face, and above all, his cooperation and joint efforts."
"We appreciate the encouraging language of the report, both in its clear reflection of Albania's reforms and achievements in the last two years, as well as in the areas where we need to do more, faster and better," the Speaker of Parliament underlined.
Spiropali emphasized that, "this report comes at an important moment, as Albania is advancing with determination, in fact in an unprecedented way - as Commissioner Kos herself emphasized in the session on July 8 - on the path to membership in the European Union, in full compliance with both the aspirations of the Albanian people and the fundamental values of the European Union, to further strengthen democracy, the rule of law, the protection of human rights, good governance, the fight against organized crime and corruption, the strengthening of public administration and freedom of the media."
“The report recognizes the progress Albania has made in fulfilling the conditions for opening and advancing in the negotiating chapters and calls on EU institutions and member states to maintain a merit-based, fair and predictable approach towards Albania,” she further wrote.
"We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to continue at an even faster pace the reforms necessary for membership and to cooperate closely with the institutions of the European Union and we consider the report an important political message, which fully coincides with the clear message that Albanian citizens gave with their vote in the May 11 elections, to walk resolutely on the path of European integration", underlined the Speaker of the Parliament.
"We are aware of and fully committed to the rigorous and transformative nature of the accession process and to the need for even closer and deeper cooperation with all European institutions, including the European Parliament, and in this context we also welcome recommendations to further deepen reforms, to bring concrete benefits to Albanian citizens and to contribute to the strengthening and unity of the European Union", Spiropali further emphasized.
