How many "super pensioners" does Albania have? Women dominate the list of Albanians over 100 years old
There are 364 citizens living in Albania who have passed the age of 100. The 2023 Census data shows that of these, 301 are women and only 63 are men, a ratio that clearly reflects the gender gap in Albanian life expectancy. Women continue to live longer than men, a trend known throughout the world, but which in Albania is particularly evident at very advanced ages. This rare group represents a generation that has gone through more than a century of history, living through the country's most turbulent periods, from world wars, the communist regime and democratic transformation.
But beyond the curiosity of the over 100-year-olds, a broader picture comes from the data on citizens over 85. Across the country, there are over 41,000 people who have passed this age, with different distributions according to regions. Tirana has the highest number in total, with 9,372 citizens over 85, but due to its large population, they constitute only 1.2 percent of the population. On the other hand, Gjirokastra turns out to have the highest percentage of the population over 85, with 2.6 percent, followed by Vlora with 2.2 percent and Fier and Korça with 1.8 percent each. Durrës and Tirana rank at the bottom in terms of the percentage of elderly people in this age group, while regions such as Shkodra, Lezha and Elbasan are in the middle of the ranking.
These data highlight an interesting profile of the distribution of life expectancy in the country, but also of demographic problems, such as the aging of the population or the emigration of young people. As the country gradually ages and life expectancy increases, a question that arises is whether social policy will need to change to reflect these developments. We recall that during 2024, about 29 thousand pensioners were added to the scheme, having reached the age and having connected an old-age pension with the Social Security Institute.
