Germany, record number of inhabitants - But the growth has not come due to

Germany's population reached 83.6 million at the end of 2024, reaching a historic high. However, the population is showing signs of aging, as the number of immigrants increases.

At the end of 2024, there were almost 83.6 million people living in Germany, more than ever before. Compared to the previous year, the population grew by 121,000 people, or 0.1 percent, according to a press release from the German Statistical Office Destatis. However, the growth slowed down, because a year earlier it reached 338,000 people, or 0.4 percent.

The German Statistical Office calculates the population based on official birth and death data. The provisional data can serve as a guide, although corrections are still possible.

The calculation also includes the so-called migration balance, the difference between people who have arrived and those who have left Germany. According to the data, this balance fell from 660,000 to 420,000 in 2024. According to the Statistical Office's assessment, the increase in the number of residents, like last year, was due to the influx of immigrants.

The largest increase in residents was recorded in Bavaria, with 73,000 more people. High expansion figures were also recorded in Berlin and Hamburg, with 0.6 percent each.

The development varies depending on age groups, with the population seen to be moving towards old age. The number of people between 60 and 79 years old increased by 2.2 percent, while the number of those between 40 and 59 years old decreased by 1.4 percent.

The foreign population grew by 2.3 percent last year to 12.4 million, while the number of German citizens fell by 0.2 percent to 71.2 million. The share of foreigners in the total population thus rose from 14.5 to 14.8 percent.

The largest group of foreigners still consists of citizens of Turkey (1.403 million), followed by Ukraine (1.085 million), Syria (889,000), Romania (771,000) and Poland (723,000).
