Tourists 'added' Albania with 277 thousand inhabitants in May/ Albania for one month, with about 2.6 million people
This May, Albania has not only been warmer, but also more populated than usual. The influx of foreign tourists has been felt everywhere on the streets, at customs points and in airports. According to INSTAT data, during the month of May alone, 987,077 foreign citizens entered the country. Meanwhile, 710,048 Albanian citizens have left the territory, for holidays or seasonal trips. But what does this mean in real terms?
Taking as a basis the resident population of Albania in 2025, which is estimated at 2,363,314 inhabitants, and adding the entries of foreigners while subtracting the exits of Albanians, it results that on an average day in May, Albania had about 2.64 million people physically present in its territory.
This means that, compared to the official population, the country has "temporarily grown" by about 277 thousand people, or 11.7% more than normal. A percentage that reflects more than just numbers, but an Albania that is becoming increasingly international.
If we simplify it even further, out of every 100 people we may have encountered on the streets of Albania this May, around 37 were either foreign tourists or Albanians living abroad who came for a few days. A reality that does not happen often in May, which is traditionally considered the "antique" of the tourist season.
But what was the probability that these people were of different nationalities? According to the data, a significant portion of the people we may have encountered on the street were Italians, Kosovo Albanians, and Germans.
However, the significant increase in the influx shows that Albania is increasingly extending the season. And if this trend continues into June, July and August, then the summer of 2025 could turn out to be one of the most overcrowded we have ever experienced.
