Did the tax curb overtourism in Venice? The measure for day tourists raised over

The end of July marked the end of the second year of the trial period for Venice’s day-trip tax. For 54 days in April, May, June and July, tourists spending just one day in the city were required to book their visit and, with some exceptions, pay a fee. The tax was designed to curb day-trip tourism, which overcrowds the small city during peak months and provides little benefit to local residents.

However, this year's figures show that the number of daily visitors has only suffered a slight decline compared to last year, with the busiest days registering almost 25,000 tourists, half the population of Venice.

One important change was the double fee of 10 euros for tourists who booked their visit less than four days in advance, to avoid last-minute rush and help authorities manage the situation. But data shows that around half of visitors pay the double fee.

In total, during 2025, 723,497 tourists paid the daily visit tax, bringing in revenue of 5,421,425 euros. This is almost twice as many as in 2024, when 485,062 payments were recorded with a total of 2.4 million euros, although that year the tax was only in effect for 29 days.

The average daily number of visitors paying the fee was 13,046 in 2025, slightly less than 16,676 in 2024, a slight decrease that is consistent with the general trend of decreasing tourist numbers in the region.

For those who want to avoid the big crowds, the daily fee also provides a useful guide to the least busy days and times to visit. As last year, Saturday was the busiest day, with an average of 13,046 tourists per day.

Although the tax does not seem to have stopped tourists from visiting Venice on its busiest days, the city council claims that the revenue will be invested in serving residents. After deducting management costs, at least 1.5 million euros will be used to reduce the city's waste tax.
