Myth busted, young people are demanding ownership of land! Over 81% of

Traditionally, the village is "owned" by men and women have little or no rights over the land.

Historical data from the early stages of land reform show that only 8% of women were named on land purchase documents.

While according to a UN Women report, ownership of real estate, including construction plots, agricultural land, forests and pastures, is currently held by 18.5% by women and 81.5% by men.

A recently published study "On the role of women in rural areas in the Western Balkans", highlights that in Albania the majority of respondents do not exclusively own land or agricultural plots, and many rely on land owned by others.

Co-ownership is more common among those working on farms, while individuals in other jobs are more likely to report not owning land or agricultural plots.

Based on the survey conducted for this study, it was found that 1/3 of respondents support equal inheritance rights.

Women who are not part of the labor market are less likely to accept equal inheritance, while younger women are more likely to accept it.

For example, respondents involved in agriculture tend to favor equal inheritance, while those in other occupations have different preferences. The practice of "Only the male shall inherit" has relatively few supporters, suggesting a departure from traditional gender-based inheritance norms.

Cultural changes resulting from migration and greater distances from parents have influenced young people's perceptions of land inheritance. According to the study, young people tend to support equal land inheritance.

Women from remote and deep areas, living in a household with a small land size per capita, with low land information, without access to extension services, and who perceive inequality in household decision-making, are more likely to experience inequality regarding land rights compared to male household members.

Access to assets is very important for understanding women's power along the value chain.
