How many square meters of forest do we have for every Albanian? The green

In 2024, the country's forest and pasture fund extended to over 1.7 million hectares, representing 60% of the territory. With the population registered at the beginning of 2025, each Albanian has an average of about 4,850 square meters of forest. The figure sounds generous, but the question that arises is how much of this wealth we touch in our daily lives and how much of it is actually protected.

Of this area, about two-thirds are forests, a quarter pastures and meadows, while the rest is unproductive land with forest vegetation. In forests alone, there are over 53 million cubic meters of wood, a green treasure where 94% is public property and only a small part is private.

In 2024, the network of protected areas included 777 units with an area of 624 thousand hectares. Compared to the previous year, the number of areas has increased, but the area has shrunk by over 1,400 hectares.

National parks, the heart of protected areas, were reduced from 13 to 12 and lost over 1,300 hectares of surface area, although half of the protected areas remain. Natural monuments suffered the most drastic decline, from 1,585 hectares, today only 86 remain. This decline is related to methodological changes in the measurement and classification of these areas, and they represent only 0.01% of the surface area of protected areas.

Managed nature reserves and protected landscapes have also lost area, although their number has increased in some cases. In the only managed resource areas, the figures remain unchanged, while there are no strict nature reserves at all.

In total, protected areas constitute 36% of the forest fund and 22% of the country's surface area.
