Albanian immigrants "abandon" Italy and Greece / Reason, the economic challenges of these countries. Germany and Northern Europe, the new "magnet"

About 79% of Albanian emigrants live in Italy, Greece and the US. According to data reported by the Diplomatic and Consular Missions of Albania, the largest number of Albanians registered abroad is found in Italy, specifically over 389 thousand.
In second place is Greece with over 264 thousand Albanian immigrants and the United States of America with 224 thousand. In other words, about 35% of Albanians registered abroad are in Italy, 24% in Greece and 20% in the USA. Most Albanians live in Athens, Thessaloniki, Rome and Milan.
However, Western European countries are not far behind. Germany and the United Kingdom continue to be some of the favorite destinations for Albanian emigration. Specifically, Albanian emigrants in Germany are estimated to be over 119 thousand, while in the United Kingdom, around 100 thousand Albanians have settled.
According to the Annual Migration Profile for 2024, Italy and Greece, which have historically been the two main destinations for Albanian emigrants, are no longer preferred by new emigrants. Due to economic and social challenges in traditional host countries such as Italy and Greece, in 2023 a part of Albanian emigrants were directed towards other European countries, especially Germany and the countries of Northern and Central Europe.
So, despite the fact that Italy and Greece have the largest number of immigrants, in recent years there has been a trend of Albanians moving to Central and Northern European countries, due to better job opportunities, more open migration policies, and easier integration for immigrants.
Among the main factors of emigration of Albanian citizens, those of an economic nature predominate, such as unemployment and poverty, but also other factors related to health services, family reunification or professional opportunities.
Italy and Greece have historically been the main destinations due to geographical proximity, low cost of immigration, but also other factors related to legal opportunities for family reunification.
