Global LNG exports in 2025 - Recorded the biggest increase in three years

Global exports of liquefied natural gas in 2025 are likely to see their biggest increase in three years. Exports are estimated to have risen 4% from last year to 429 million tonnes, according to Kpler, which tracks shipping data. That would be the biggest annual increase since 2022, when exports rose 4.5% from a year earlier, the data showed. The growth was driven largely by projects such as LNG Canada and Plaquemines in the US that boosted production.

The US is poised to cement its role as a major exporter, becoming the first to ship more than 100 million tonnes of LNG this year. The country is expected to continue to increase supply, doubling production by the end of the decade and boosting exports in turn.

The extra production could further squeeze demand for ships that carry the super-cold fuel. Last month, the cost of shipping LNG across the Atlantic Ocean hit its highest level in almost two years as a surge in supply boosted demand for tankers.

December export figures could reach a record of around 41 million tonnes, according to Kpler. China and Japan remain the world's biggest buyers, although the data showed total Chinese imports this year are about 15% lower than in 2024.

Globally, LNG trading volumes are expected to continue to grow by 7.5% to 8% next year, driven by a wave of new supply and lower prices that should stimulate demand.
