Egypt, 30 million USD to "transform" the pyramids - The reconstruction

About 2.5 million people visit the Pyramids of Giza each year, hoping for an epic experience worthy of one of the Seven Wonders of the World. But for decades, a trip to Egypt's most famous tourist site meant braving crowds and dodging aggressive street vendors.

Now, thanks to a $30 million renovation that completely changes the experience, seeing the pyramids finally inspires more awe than anxiety. A network of buses shuttles visitors around the site, aggressive sales have been toned down, and you can even enjoy some great food with views of the 4,600-year-old monuments.

All this innovation officially debuts on July 3, after seven years of preparation. In 2018, the Egyptian government signed a public-private partnership agreement with Orascom Pyramids Entertainment of Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris to rebuild the Giza Plateau, the area west of Cairo where the ancient structures are located.

The opening date coincides with the long-awaited inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the $1 billion flagship attraction located about 1.5km away. Together, the two projects represent some of the biggest steps yet in Egypt’s goal of doubling annual visitors to 30 million within a decade. That’s a target that would put it roughly on par with Greece and one of the most visited countries in the world.

A major change was the transformation of the Giza Plateau into a car-free zone. Instead of driving in the shadow of the Great Pyramid, visitors now enter through a gate on a highway 2.5 km to the southwest.

Visitor numbers rose by almost 24% in April compared to a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Egypt's tourism sector is doing well and saw record arrivals in the first months of 2025, so it is unclear how much the project itself fueled the growth.

The pyramids attract only 2.5 million visitors a year, half of whom are Egyptians. By comparison, over 12 million people went to the Colosseum in Rome in 2023.
