Social media traces lead to hidden accounts - Treska: Online contracts reveal

For every euro or dollar earned, whether on online platforms, law enforcement agencies in Albania can monitor this income to determine the amount that must be declared. The same approach is followed by the Tax Directorate: through online contracts signed between the creator and the platform, the obligation to declare within the country is measured, as in the case of the launch of the investigation into approximately 33 million euros undeclared by social networks.

"These revenues that come from social networks are normally taxed immediately; if we talk about Google's part, an online contract is made that shows that advertising and Google's tax are included. Thus, at the end of the day, an agreement is made between the taxation applied abroad and the one that must be paid in Albania," says accountant Etleva Treska.

According to the Tax Department, on average, a person who earns money from social networks is accused of failing to declare income worth around 330 thousand euros; if investigations by the Tax Directorate manage to prove them, the damage could be double.

"The income tax law provides for 15% as the first stage of taxation, but then it has its own consequences: at this moment the initial liability is reviewed. If you have 10 thousand lek in liability, the state can reassess, and the taxpayer must pay an additional amount," says Ms. Treska.

The Tax Administration has taken a series of measures to make money online, including profits from cryptocurrencies, following the practices of developed countries such as the United States of America, Great Britain or Canada.
