Europe, electric car sales increase by 27% - Tesla records decline for the fifth

Sales of new Tesla cars in Europe fell by 27.9% in May compared to a year earlier, even though purchases of fully electric vehicles in the region rose by 27.2%, compared to the same period in 2024.

Overall car sales in Europe rose by 1.9%, with the strongest growth coming from hybrid vehicles and cars powered by alternative fuels, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Tesla's European sales fell for the fifth consecutive month as customers opted for cheaper Chinese electric vehicles and, in some cases, protested against CEO Elon Musk's policies.

Tesla's European market share fell to just 1.2% in May, from 1.8% a year earlier. The Model Y is intended to refresh the company's older model range, as traditional automakers and Chinese rivals launch electric vehicles at a rapid pace.

New car sales in May in the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose to 1.11 million vehicles, after a 0.3% decline in April.

Registrations at Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor and Germany's BMW expanded by 22.5% and 5.6% respectively. In the EU alone, total car sales have fallen by 0.6% so far this year.

This comes despite growing demand for electric vehicles, with registrations of battery electric and hybrid-electric cars increasing by 26.1% and 19.8% respectively.

Among the largest EU markets, new vehicle sales in Spain and Germany expanded by 18.6% and 1.2% respectively, while in France and Italy they fell by 12.3% and 0.1%.
