Public transport is one of the most important factors for the well-being of cities, especially in large cities where there is a high influx of citizens and tourists. The European Statistical Agency has published a report on the number of buses per 1,000 inhabitants in all European countries. But how does Albania rank in this regard?

Data shows that in Albania there are about 3.8 buses per 1,000 inhabitants, ranking our country among the countries with the highest ratio of public transport vehicles in Europe. Meanwhile, according to Eurostat data, during 2024, 432 new buses were added in Albania.

Albania ranks fourth in Europe, behind Georgia, which has 14.8 buses per 1,000 inhabitants, as well as behind Turkey and Luxembourg, which also register a high ratio.

At the regional level, Albania leads in terms of the number of buses per capita. It is followed by Montenegro with 2.4 buses per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by North Macedonia with 2 buses per 1,000 inhabitants. Meanwhile, Serbia and Kosovo maintain lower ratios, with 1.8 and 1.5 buses per 1,000 inhabitants, respectively. The last place in the region for the number of buses is Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 2024, there were 737 142 buses (including trolleybuses, minibuses and mini-buses) in the European Union, or 1.6 buses per 1 000 inhabitants. This motorisation rate has remained stable for the last ten years, while the number of passenger cars per 1 000 inhabitants has increased significantly over the same period, from 506 in 2014 to 578 in 2024.

The highest number of buses per 1,000 inhabitants in the EU was recorded in Malta (4.6), followed by Luxembourg (4.0) and Estonia (3.7). The lowest rates were recorded in the Netherlands (0.5), Germany (1.0) and Austria (1.2).

If we also refer to data on public transport prices, Albania and the Balkan countries continue to be among the regions with the lowest public transport costs in Europe, even at a time when the largest European cities are facing significant price increases.
