Will Kosovo accept asylum seekers rejected by Britain? - Acting Prime Minister

Kosovo has become the first country to publicly confirm that it is considering the possibility of building centers for the return of asylum seekers rejected by Britain.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said that Kosovo "wants to help" the United Kingdom in the fight against illegal immigration, in exchange for support for strengthening security against threats from Serbia and Russia.

On the eve of the Western Balkans leaders' summit to be held on Wednesday in London, Kurti confirmed that talks are taking place between Kosovo and United Kingdom officials on this issue.

British media have reported on the issue. Albin Kurti said there are “limited capacities” in this small country with a population of less than two million, but he expects a “successful outcome” from the negotiations.

Talks are underway, he confirmed, between officials from both countries on an agreement for the return of migrants, for those whose asylum claims have been rejected by Britain and who are awaiting deportation to their country of origin.

According to British media, a team from the UK Home Office is exploring options for how this agreement could work, although a formal request has not yet been made to Kosovo.

Kurti, who is attending a Western Balkans Summit in London, said that "We want to help the United Kingdom, we consider this as a friendly and political duty."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has identified the Western Balkan countries as key allies in the fight against irregular migration, with 22,000 people using this route to reach the United Kingdom last year.

The British government has signed agreements to combat human trafficking gangs with Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia and Kosovo.

Keir Starmer said earlier this year that the government was in talks with several states to set up "return centres" which he called an "important innovation" for individuals who have exhausted all appeals in the British system.

Kosovo is the first country to confirm that these negotiations are underway, and further discussions are expected to take place within the framework of this week's summit.
