The highway with the longest tunnel in the world opens - The road that runs through the mountains is 324.7 km and the tunnel is 22.13 km long
After more than five years of construction, the Urumqi-Yuli highway traversing the Tianshan Mountains in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region opened to traffic on Friday, halving the travel time from the southern to northern parts of the majestic mountains.
Thanks to the opening of the highway, the travel time from the regional capital of Urumqi, north of the Tianshan Mountains, to Korla, south of the Tianshan Mountains, has been shortened from seven hours to about 3.5 hours.
The Tianshan Mountains, with a length of 2,500 km, stretch across the entire Autonomous Region. The highway that runs through them is 324.7 kilometers long. It includes 12 intersections, 17 tunnels, and hundreds of bridges, canals, and overpasses.
With a total length of 22.13 kilometers, the tunnel is the longest in the world on a highway.
This route provides convenient connections between the three major pilot free trade zones, significantly reducing logistics costs, effectively promoting the mutual complementarity of resource advantages, and accelerating the bilateral circulation of energy production and equipment with agricultural products.
The highway connects with the New Eurasian Land Bridge and the main arteries of the numerous economic corridors connecting China with Central Asia, West Asia and Pakistan. Meanwhile, it also connects with the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. Therefore, the operation of the highway will further consolidate Xinjiang's role as a strategic hub in the 'dual circulation' of domestic and international markets.
