Cristiano Ronaldo, the first billionaire footballer - The Portuguese star's fortune has reached 1.4 billion dollars
Cristiano Ronaldo, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward who currently plays for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, has become the first billionaire footballer in history. According to Bloomberg, the Portuguese star's fortune has reached $1.4 billion.
A key factor has been Ronaldo's ability to capitalise on his image through luxury sponsorships, such as those with Armani, Nike and Castrol. His contract renewal with Al-Nassr last June has also played a role, bringing the 40-year-old Portuguese over $400m in additional income.
For a long time, Cristiano and his longtime rival Lionel Messi had similar fortunes. But in 2023, their financial paths diverged significantly: Ronaldo moved to the Saudi League, while Messi joined American team Inter Miami, part of Major League Soccer. However, the Argentine will acquire a share of the American club after he retires, which could bring him back to the same financial level as Ronaldo.
According to Bloomberg calculations, the Portuguese star has earned over $550 million in wages between 2002 and 2023. He has also signed a 10-year contract with Nike, worth almost $18 million per year, as well as other sponsorship deals with big brands such as Armani and Castrol, which have added more than $175 million to his fortune.
His move to Al-Nassr in 2023 has earned him around $200 million a year in tax-free salary and bonuses, including a $30 million signing bonus. In June, Cristiano signed a contract extension with the Saudi team, reportedly worth over $400 million.
