Walk 21, international conference on urban policies - Rama: Work continues to free up public spaces
Walk21 is an international conference, which is in its 25th edition. Experts from all over the world have gathered at this conference to share experiences and ideas on the best ways to develop and implement pedestrian-focused projects, a project that is expected to take place on the streets of the former Blloku area.
Present at this conference, Prime Minister Edi Rama began his speech with the radical changes in Tirana, comparing it to the time of communism.
"When I became mayor in 2000, we had to take back our city by demolishing more than 10,000 buildings. We removed 132,000 tons of concrete from the river alone, which was rubble from the demolition. We planted 55,000 trees. Although we did a lot to bring back space for people to enjoy walking, walking became increasingly difficult."
Rama said that work is still ongoing to clear public spaces. Meanwhile, anyone who wants to receive a building permit must contribute to the green fund with trees.
"I am also super happy to share with you the very good news for us, that we have managed to take a space in the very busy agenda of a genius, I don't know how many of you know Salvador Rueda who is the person who made the super blocks in Barcelona, which have brought and continue to bring an extraordinary change in the city by creating much more space for people walking and forcing the cars that pass, those super blocks, to move at a very low speed. It is an extraordinary and very beautiful formula that has so many positive results, whether for healthcare, protection from strokes for the elderly due to heat or exposure for a very long time in the sun in circumstances where circulation is unbearable or traffic is unbearable. Asthma care and so on. Not to mention the very positive impact in terms of community life, extraordinary impact."
