AI could "disappear" 100 million jobs in the US - Senate report

A United States Senate report shows that artificial intelligence and automation could replace nearly 100 million jobs across various industries over the next decade.

The report, compiled by the Democratic staff of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, outlines the ways in which technology and automation will impact the American economy and workforce.

The commission has warned of the potential consequences that the widespread use of advanced technology could bring to workers. During the investigation, staff also used OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, to predict the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on specific industries.

Of the 20 sectors identified as most affected by technological developments, in 15 of them it is predicted that more than half of employees will be replaced by technology in the next decade.

The workforce most affected will be fast food and counter workers. According to the report, more than 3 million workers in this field are expected to be eliminated over the next ten years, accounting for 89% of the total.

Other sectors that will be significantly affected include customer service representatives, manual workers involved in the transportation of goods, and secretaries and executive assistants, excluding legal, medical and executive positions. The report notes that, respectively, 83%, 81% and 80% of workers in these fields are expected to be replaced by technology over the next decade.

The report also calls for public policy changes to protect workers during the technological transition. Proposals include establishing a standard 32-hour workweek, setting a minimum wage of at least $17 an hour, and eliminating tax breaks for corporations that use artificial intelligence and automation.
