Renewable energy surpasses coal - China and India lead global growth of green

The world's wind and solar plants have generated more electricity than coal-fired power plants for the first time this year, marking a turning point for the global energy system.

A report by the Ember climate institute found that during the first six months of 2025, renewable energy outpaced the world's growing demand for electricity, leading to a small decrease in coal and gas use.

The world produced about a third more solar power in the first half of the year than in the same period in 2024, meeting 83% of the global demand growth. Wind power expanded by just over 7%, allowing renewables to overtake fossil fuels for the first time.

According to the report, China and India were largely responsible for the expansion of renewable energy, in contrast to the US and Europe, which rely more on fossil fuels.

Another report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) found that global renewable energy capacity could double by the end of the decade, with 80% of new green capacity expected to come from solar power.

China will remain the largest market for growth in this sector, while India will rank second over the next decade.

Beijing added more green capacity than all other countries combined, leading to a 2% contraction in fossil fuel use in the first half of the year, compared with the same period in 2024.
