Are Educated Families Cutting Back? Consumption Increase Observed Among Families with Unfinished Education
Albanian family consumption has increased during 2024, but not for everyone. According to the latest INSTAT data, analyzed by "Scan Intel", while average monthly consumption expenditures have increased slightly nationally, families with higher education have recorded the most significant decline in consumption compared to a year ago.
In total, an Albanian family spent an average of 93 thousand lek per month, with a small but positive increase. However, behind this average lies a clear change in consumer behavior according to the education of the head of the household.
Families with higher or postgraduate education have reduced their consumption by about 2 thousand lek per month, dropping from 115,893 lek in 2023 to 113,883 lek in 2024. This is the category with the largest drop in spending, after several years of stability.
This development suggests that the contraction in consumption is also affecting the urban middle and upper classes, which have traditionally been more economically stable.
On the other hand, families with secondary education have seen a slight increase in consumption, from 96,176 lek to 96,790 lek, while those with 8/9 years of education have remained almost at the same level. Meanwhile, families with low or no education have slightly increased their consumption, from 62,840 lek to 64,013 lek, perhaps as a result of the increase in the minimum wage and social assistance policies that have eased the pressure on their budgets.
Despite these moves, the gap between groups remains large. A family with a higher education still spends approximately 30,000 to 50,000 lek more per month than a family with an 8-year education or a family with a head of household without any completed level, which shows that education remains one of the strongest dividers of economic well-being in the country.
