Young people in the labor market/ 7 thousand fewer employees compared to last

Young people in Albania are facing a job market that has changed significantly over the past year. According to data, in the second quarter of 2026, there were approximately 170 thousand employed people in the age group 15–29 in Albania. A year earlier, in the same quarter, the number of employed young people was around 177 thousand. This means that within a year, around 7 thousand fewer employees were registered in this age group, or a decrease of 4%. Meanwhile, the number of employed young people increased compared to the first quarter by almost 3,200 people, or 1.9%.

Meanwhile, the number of young unemployed people has increased from around 31 thousand in the second quarter of 2025 to 36 thousand in the second quarter of 2026. The increase is around 5,100 people, or 16.1%, indicating that more young people are out of work, despite being part of the labor force. Even with the first quarter of the year, there is an increase in the number of unemployed young people.

INSTAT data also shows that the number of inactive young people, i.e. those who are neither employed nor looking for a job, has fallen from approximately 196 thousand in the second quarter of 2025 to around 189 thousand at the beginning of the year and 183 thousand in the second quarter of 2026. This may be related to changes in youth participation in education but also to emigration.

In total, the labor force for the age group 15–29, which includes employed and unemployed people looking for work, has fallen from 209 thousand people in the second quarter of 2025 to 207 thousand in the second quarter of 2026. So, despite the increase in the number of unemployed, the total number of young people active in the labor market is slightly lower.

The changes in the youth labor market come at a time when employment, migration, and career choices are among the most important issues for this age group. INSTAT data shows that the challenge is not only related to finding a job, but also to the number of young people participating in the labor market and their opportunities to build a career in Albania.
