260 million euros for energy - Croatia approves package to curb rising bills for families and businesses
Croatia's government has approved a package of measures worth 260 million euros, aimed at cushioning the impact of rising energy prices, driven by the war in the Middle East and uncertainties in global supply. The Croatian prime minister said that rising energy costs are spreading to other sectors of the economy, affecting transport, industry and food prices.
The package will be implemented from October 1, 2026, until the end of March 2027. Around 126 million euros will be used to keep electricity prices unchanged for households, as well as for public institutions, including schools, hospitals and museums. Prices will also be kept unchanged for companies with a six-month consumption of up to 250 thousand kilowatt-hours.
Another part of the package, worth around 44 million euros, will be used to curb the increase in gas and heating prices. According to the government, 42 million euros will go to subsidize gas and heating for households, the public sector and the non-profit sector. This measure is expected to avoid a 16% increase in gas prices.
The government will also continue to keep prices of 100 basic products capped in an effort to mitigate inflationary pressures. 54.6 million euros in energy support are foreseen for consumers in economic difficulties, while another 2 million euros will be used to help social service providers.
Meanwhile, veterans and war victims who are part of the social care system will receive a single payment of 70 euros, at a total cost of around 1 million euros. According to the Croatian prime minister, the price of Brent oil has increased by around 50% over the past year, reaching nearly $100 per barrel.
Meanwhile, the reference price of gas in Europe has increased by 136%, to around 78 euros per megawatt-hour. Since March, the Croatian government has intervened in fuel prices every week, depending on developments in international oil markets.
Without these interventions, the price of Eurosuper gasoline would have reached 1.88 euros per liter, up from 1.67 euros currently. For Eurodiesel, the price would be around 2.10 euros per liter, compared to 1.70 euros currently.
The government's interventions have led to a reduction of around 140 million euros in budget revenues in the March-September period, compared to forecasts. The new measures come at a time when inflation in Croatia accelerated to 4.1% in August, from 3.9% in July.
