Hydrogen exceeds 130 billion USD - Investments increase, but costs remain an obstacle

Global investments in clean hydrogen projects have surpassed $130 billion, as governments increasingly see this resource as a means to strengthen energy security and industrial development, while reducing emissions.
According to the Hydrogen Council report, investments include more than 570 committed projects, which support about 6.9 million tons of production capacity per year. About 90% of these projects are already under construction or have started operation.
China leads the market, accounting for more than half of the global committed capacity for renewable hydrogen. Europe ranks second in investment, while the US leads in the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen.
The report estimates that policies already in place could create a demand of around 6 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2030. If governments fully implement existing measures, demand could increase by another 5 million tonnes.
However, the sector is facing major difficulties. High production costs and weak demand have led developers to reduce investments and cancel some projects.
The steel industry and long-distance transportation, considered among the most suitable areas for the use of green hydrogen, are facing high transition costs. This is making it more difficult for the technology to move from planned projects to widespread industrial use.
