How much money will go to gender budgeting in 2026? Coverage of services for mothers and babies will be expanded

In the 2026 budget, the Albanian government has decided to deepen its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in all areas of life. The 2026 budget provides for gender budgeting in its programs, with a total of over 84 billion lek, representing 9.5% of the national budget. The National Gender Equality Strategy 2021-2030, which includes five main pillars of action, will continue to be implemented through concrete programs in sectors such as education, health, justice, agriculture and culture.
In the health sector, for the first time, breast reconstruction surgery for cancer patients will be fully funded, which is expected to benefit around 350 women per year. Coverage of maternal and infant services will also be expanded, as will breast and cervical cancer screening programs.
In education, the priority will be to support girls from rural areas and families in need, with around 220 thousand students who will benefit from free books.
In employment and social protection, financial assistance will be increased for female heads of households, mothers with many children and elderly women, with the aim of mitigating the economic consequences of inflation and facilitating reintegration into the labor market.
Women farmers will have more opportunities to benefit from agricultural support schemes and receive professional advice, while in culture, priority will be given to artists and artisans who promote Albanian cultural heritage.
In justice, the provision of free legal aid to women and girls in need will be expanded, as well as rehabilitation programs for women serving sentences. On the other hand, abused women, who make up about 47% of beneficiaries, will continue to be supported by social services.
The government emphasizes that these measures are fully consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, aiming for a more equal and inclusive society where every woman and girl has the opportunity to contribute and develop equally.
