Hives grow, jars shrink/ Beekeeping yield drops to a minimum in 2024

The beekeeping sector in Albania has experienced a paradox last year, according to data. For the first time, the number of beehives in the country has exceeded 587 thousand, marking an increase of 13.2%, compared to the previous year and a record since 2004, i.e. in the span of 20 years. But, while the quantity is increasing, the actual production seems to have taken the opposite turn.

Official INSTAT data show that the average honey yield per hive has fallen sharply in 2024, falling to 10 kilograms per hive, from around 11 kg last year, the lowest level recorded in at least the last 15 years. By comparison, in 2015, each hive produced an average of 18.3 kilograms of honey.

The decline is estimated at about 1 kilogram less and raises concerns about the sustainability of the sector. The increase in the number of hives, under normal conditions, should translate into increased production, but the data speak of a decrease in yield at alarming levels. We can mention various factors that influence this decline, including climate change, the lack of rich flora, the use of pesticides in agriculture, as well as the lack of technical support for beekeepers.

The paradox of 2024 is clear, more work for beekeepers, less honey for the market.

If we analyze the data by region, we see that Vlora leads with the highest number of hives, followed by Korça. Meanwhile, if we analyze the yield, Elbasan leads with 17 kilograms per hive.
