Vineyard map/ Which regions produce the most? - Fier leads with 39.2 thousand tons, Kukës in last place
Nearly 183 thousand tons of grapes were produced in 2024 in Albania, with an increase of only 3 tons compared to 2023, a decrease compared to previous years.
But which region has the highest productivity?
In first place is Fier, with 39.2 thousand tons produced. Followed by the Elbasan region with nearly 30 thousand tons. Then comes Berat with 17.8 thousand tons, Tirana with 17.7 thousand tons of grapes produced, followed by the Vlora region with 17.5 thousand tons. The Durrës region has produced 15.8 thousand tons of grapes, Korça 12.4 thousand tons and Dibra 10.5 thousand tons.
Other regions such as Shkodër, Lezhë, and Gjirokastër record a production of under 10 thousand tons, while Kukës closes the list with 4800 tons.
Last year, 9,358 hectares of land were in production, a significant decrease compared to previous years, where in 2020 there were 10,400 hectares, while the production yield was 115.9 kv/hectare.
Viticulture and the production of quality Albanian wines has today become a key element for the development of the agricultural sector.
In 2023, Albania became the 50th country in the world to join the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), which will give producers more opportunities to penetrate foreign markets, create bridges of cooperation, and become familiar with new cultivars and production technologies.
Likewise, the new viticulture law, which entered into force in 2024, is considered another instrument for the benefit of the sector, which establishes new rules, increased control, and is expected to influence increased formalization, which is a major problem.
Currently, the wine market in Albania is divided into 35 percent domestic production and 65 percent imports.
But the trend in recent years among citizens and tourists is the consumption of "Made in Albania" wines, which has led to an increasing demand for Albanian labels.
