Greece, European leader in 5G coverage - The country marks major advances in digital infrastructure
Greece has made progress in digital infrastructure, emerging as one of the best performers in the European Union for 5G network coverage. The European Commission's latest report on digital infrastructure is based on data from last year.
Greece achieved an impressive 99.8% 5G coverage in 2024, one of the highest rates in the EU and significantly above the bloc's average of 94.35%. This increase marks a giant leap from 2019, when the country had virtually no 5G coverage.
The ministry also highlighted significant progress in deploying high-speed internet infrastructure. Very High Capacity Network (VHCN) coverage increased from 0% in 2019 to 46.1% in 2024, far exceeding the EU average growth rate of 4.9%.
Similarly, Fibre (FTTP) coverage saw a massive increase from 0% to 46.1%, again exceeding the EU average growth rate of 8.4%. Despite these advances, overall coverage still lags behind the bloc average, reaching 82.49% for high-capacity networks and 69.24% for fibre coverage.
According to the Greek government, the growth came as a result of expanded private sector investment, particularly in fiber optic infrastructure.
In terms of digital transformation in business, Greece also marked a positive moment. In 2024, 53.4% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) achieved at least a basic level of digital intensity, an increase of 13.9% compared to the previous year. However, the ministry acknowledged that further progress is needed to match the EU average.
The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Greek businesses also showed a notable increase, going from 4.0% in 2023 to 9.8% in 2024. Reflecting this momentum, Greece was chosen to build one of the first seven artificial intelligence factories in the EU.
